Video Poker Gamble in Illinois in The United States

Posted on | March 12, 2010 | No Comments

Funding for a big piece of Illinois legislation is beginning to look like a bad bet.

Last year Governor Pat Quinn signed a $31 billion construction bill, designed to create jobs and modernise Illinois´the state’s infrastructure. The bill was funded by selling bonds, increasing licensing fees and – which has gne down badly with conservatives- by legalizing video gambling acros the state.

In order to win over critics of the bill , Governor Quinn made sure that local governments that had already banned video games such as video poker could keep those bans in place if they wished too. But he was counting on the Big Boy of the State towing the line: the Windy City, Chicago.

But this might have backfired. Chicago has long banned video poker, and Mayor Daley said recently that there was no crrent plans to change this.

Meanwhile, new number crunching from the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability forecasts that without Chicago in the picture, video gaming could fall short by around $178 million a year. So over 10 years that´s almost $2 billion os funds to make up.

"This puts the plan up the proverbial creek with no paddle in sight", according to a source. Somewhere the proverbial is steaming towards the fan at a frightening velocity.
