4 years after the General Assembly thought it had banned video poker machines, the House and Senate might consider finding a more way to live with them- as long as they pay their taxes of course.

For more than a year, there has been a moratorium on shutting down "sweepstakes cafes" or "business centers" where customers can buy Internet or phone time and also play computer-based games to win cash and prizes.

Supporters argue that punters can unwind after work and maybe win a few dollars or check their e-mail. Video poker opponents are concerned that players are spending their paychecks on the new games.

Opposition to video poker games has been strong at the General Assembly, but some senators are recommending the only solution is to regulate and tax the games- a view that is increasingly beeing held about Internet gambling across the US. The state’s amusement game owners have tried to persuade lawmakers that video poker machines should be legalized again. It has promoted a bill that would give North Carolina State 20 percent of the take.

A supporter said lawmakers should consider regulating Internet-based video poker because these games can be tracked remotely and closed down if they do not adhere to strict fair gaming principles.
